They held a rally in Jacksonville yesterday. From Diva Dirt:

Quote

Today in Jacksonville, people gathered at the Double Or Nothing rally to hear All Elite Wrestling’s plans and vision for the new promotion. A bright highlight of the rally was the announcement made by Chief Brand Officer Brandi Rhodes of the plans for the AEW’s women’s division.

During her speech at the rally, Brandi acknowledged those who had concerns over whether or not there would be a women’s division within AEW.

“The number one question I have been asked since the company was announced is, will there be a women’s division?

Well as a blossoming women’s wrestler myself, it would have been strange for me to sign a contract for a company that wasn’t going to have a women’s division. So, absolutely there will be a women’s division. But not only that, we want it to be a strong women’s division with the best female wrestlers in the entire world.

In order to do that, you got to cast a wide net, right? You can’t just say that and sit still, there’s work to be done.”

Brandi continued by stating that she had traveled all over the world to find the best female talent the industry had to offer, including places within Australia, the UK, and Japan, where she said the company had talked to “top Japanese wrestlers”.

The former WWE ring announcer also made promises that women wrestlers within their company would receive equal pay for equal talent.

“To echo something Cody said earlier, we care about our women. They are top talent, so they will be paid equally. There’s no sliding scale.”

Brandi called out their first female signee, Dr. Britt Baker, DMD, who impressed Rhodes during her match at All In, last year. Baker has wrestled for numerous promotions, including RISE, SHIMMER, Stardom, ROH, Empire State Wrestling, and Girl Fight. Baker was an alternative for the Mae Young Classic, first debuting for WWE at Raw against Nia Jax, losing in a singles match.

“Sometimes you don’t have to look that far, sometimes the best of the best is right here at home. At All In: Chicago, I was able to witness one of the best women’s fatal four-way matches I have ever seen. Those girls are talented. And, we were lucky to sign one of them.”

Baker took to the stage, and explained her decision to sign with All Elite, confirming the dedication AEW has for the women of the company.

“AEW is going to elevate all of prof wrestling to new heights.

Also want to point out, that I’m here not only as the first woman signee for the wrestling company, but I’m one of the first overall athletes that they’re signing to the company. Which just goes to show they mean what they say when they value women’s wrestling, and they are absolutely prioritizing it.

And as a member of the roster, I hope not only to showcase my talents, but also to set an example to everybody: children, adults, men, women, that you need to pursue everything and anything you have a true passion for, because today marks one of the most memorable days of my life.

Sometimes you have to take a chance on yourself, and last year in Chicago, I went all in. But I didn’t win. However, this May in Las Vegas, it’s Double Or Nothing. So, we’ll see you guys there.”

The company also announced the signing of Penelope Ford, who accompanied partner Joey Janela to the stage, where he promised to put their mark on the promotion.

Ford is best known for her work with Combat Zone Wrestling, as well as her time at Women Superstars Uncensored, where she held the WSU Tag Team Championship with Maria Manic.

The promotion’s first show will be held on May 25 at the MGM Grand Las Vegas Resort and Casino. AEW urges fans to look for upcoming ticket sale dates.

I'm excited to see who they will sign. So far we have Britt Baker, Penelope Ford and Brandi Rhodes. I have not seen a lot from any of them because I don't keep up with the indie scene very much but once this gets off the ground I will definitely be checking it out. I also love that she mentioned equal pay for the ladies.

With Brandi alluding signing or wanting to sign some girls from Europe, Australia, and Japan hopefully they do grab quite a few of those girls (KLR, Bea, Shazza, Indi, etc) as they'd be an absolute steal and make for a solid division.  Love to see those girls get US exposure.

I'm glad they're going to have a women's division.

The equal pay bit is interesting and definitely sounds nice, but they didn't really explain what that means. In other interviews at the same event, they mentioned that there wouldn't be a sliding scale with the pay structure. But then said pay would also be determined by the wrestler's level of experience, background, etc...so a sliding scale. It would be awesome to think that Chris Jericho & Britt Baker are getting paid the same, but I can't see them doing that.

I believe what they mean is midcard women will be paid the same base pay as the midcard males, and same for low and high card guys and girls. Assuming base pay will be the same, but things like bonuses for merch, PPV sales, etc will be how others (like Jericho, etc) will make more than others.

omg yes! and I hope Emma can sign, but I think she is under ROH

I feel like WWE snatch some of the top women in the wrestling, but that doesn't mean AEW can't build women to the star level like Charlotte, Becky, etc. especially when TNA had stars like Awesome Kong, Angelina Love, Taylor Wilde and then Gail Kim, who was former WWE's talent, but grew as her own star there.

Well, AEW obviously doesn't have the same exposure, but I agree with you. Both Angelina and Kong would be huge signees right now for them, they still can hang with the youngsters and are actually great at carrying a match. And dang, Taylor was a one of a kind, she made magic in the ring.

Meh, WWE snatched all the good USA indy girls. I only care about European and Japanese girls but I doubt they will move to another continent to face Britt Barker

i feel like they said so much yet none of it actually meant anything

"we have equal pay" but pay is determined on background, so, no

almost everyone in this roster is basically those that performed at all in, everyone minus brandi is white, and the women signed aren't really top tier talent (i know how everyone feels about britt, but she isn't an asuka or becky).

im intrigued to give them a chance, but so far it just feels like the same shit just in a slightly shinier but also smaller toilet

I wasn't talking about AEW snatching Kong and Love, but having/making stars of their girls like TNA did with those girls and Wilde. I wish them the best! Tessa from Impact has star quality, it would be interesting if she would join them

I feel like they’re doing a lot of talking, but still not really saying much. I’ll wait for this to develop more while seeing who else they actually can get signed. I won’t be watching anyway but I wish them well.

I heard they're interested in Mayu Iwatani and Viper too but Viper is supposedly WWE-bound (Isn't she contracted to WOS though?)

I hope they pick up Indi Hartwell, Shazza McKenzie or Kellyanne (I really wanted her in last year's MYC ugh). I'd expect Emma to be signed somewhere down the line too.

WOS is a sinking ship. I think Kay Lee Ray is coming over too.

I guess it was a no for Penelope at NXT try outs 😔

No Barbi Hayden tho? She would be nice to have around. And she's from the US, since Brandi mentioned it

New faces pls. Nothing against the indie/TNA vets but I want something fresh. Would have been for Tessa going but Impact isn't in that bad of a space anymore tbh. Mickie going to become the first woman to hold every major championship would be a look for her though:frecklefox:

I'm annoyed Penelope picked AEW over NXT... She would be a nice fit in WWE.

I mean I guess, I'm just not really a fan of her lol. I can see her getting signed, I was just excited to hear they were looking into the Australian scene and brought up some prominent names from there.

If this company is really paying the likes of Britt Baker the same as Chris Jericho and the Bucks :ahh::ahh:

Edit: just saw the above post. Way to back track Brandi. She’s such a flop.

I want them to sign Alpha Female. She deserves a run in a mainstream company.

I'm low-key getting really excited for this. I hope that they land that TBS or TNT deal.

this is why it's dodgy to me. they're trying to openly bank on it being equal pay, but then are basing it off of things are either secretive (i.e. sales) or their background, which can be quite subjective depending on who you ask. i don't think equal pay is the issue, it's the fact that they're trying to promote on the basis of it without necessarily having to come through with the promise. should've just left it out of the speech and ate their food.

I hope this promotion does well, as it might light a fire under WWE's was to be more creative. However all this equal pay is a little confusing if it's only entry level
