Pop Culture Anniversaries: Part Three

Y'all knew I wouldn't let the year go by without pushing my nostalgia agenda and commemorating more seminal albums, movies and TV shows that are celebrating a huge birthday this year! So gather round, let's reminisce and bond!

Starting with Y2K, the year 2000, the new millennium. A year which brought futurism and optimism and a lot of memorable work that resonates with me to this day. Of course let's get the obvious out of the way. My all time faves released two of the biggest albums of all time, and two of my favorite pop albums of all time:

Songs such Shape of My Heart, The Call, More Than That, Everyone, Get Another Boyfriend, Oops!...I Did it Again, Stronger, Lucky, Don't Go Knockin' On My Door and Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know really defined my childhood and I still love them endlessly today.

In the year 2000, my taste also broadened and I was exposed to new artists and shit, some that I hadn't really processed or heard of prior (and some which I just grew to appreciate and love). Some other essentials of that year, celebrating their 20th birthday, include:

Then there was an album that brought forth an eternal conflict. I was a Backstreet Boys stan, an unwavering one at that. But then this classic dropped and I was shaken...

Bye Bye Bye, This I Promise You, I'll Never Stop, I Thought She Knew, Bringin' Da Noise, It's Gonna Be Me, It Makes Me Ill, No Strings Attached, That's When I'll Stop Loving You... not a single skip, we...

Cycling back five years earlier comes the albums that soundtrack my first memories; albums my mom and dad would always play. From 1995, CLASSICS celebrating their 25th birthday:

Mr. Smith - LL Cool J.jpg VA-Waiting to Exhale (album cover).jpg Monica-miss-thang.jpg

My later discoveries from that year also play a huge role in who I am today, and whew it's a catalogue, all of which are also among my all time faves:

Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill.jpg A painting of women in outer space Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory album cover.jpg Radiohead.bends.albumart.jpg

Then comes pre-teen me, entering puberty with a fully developed and diverse taste ranging from pop to hip-hop to rock (the last of which I became a more avid fan of when I started guitar lessons with a sexy hipster teacher). From 2005, albums celebrating their 15th birthday which I hold a special place for:

Late registration cd cover.jpg Coldplay X&Y.svg Gorillaz Demon Days.PNG A bronzed woman wearing a gold dress and heels, standing behind a black backdrop.

50 Cent - The Massacre.png Monkey Business.png The portrait of a blonde woman sitting in front of a white background. She is sitting, looking into the camera. She is wearing a gray colored, full-sleeved top. To the bottom of the picture, the words "Hilary Duff" and "Most Wanted" are printed in grey block letters. Never gone.jpg Fall Out Boy - From Under the Cork Tree - CD album cover.jpg Chris brown.jpg Mary J Blige - The Breakthrough.png

From music to movies, the reason for this section of the forum. There are SOOOO many classics I loved growing up (and some I probably shouldn't have been watching, but my mom let me anyway since she wanted to watch them). Then there are those I got to experience in more recent years, but adore just as much. We'll start with the movies from 1995:

Theatrical release poster featuring Batman and various characters from the film. Seven (movie) poster.jpg Before Sunrise poster.jpg A Goofy Movie poster.jpg

Jumanji poster.jpg Pocahontasposter.jpg The poster features Woody anxiously holding onto Buzz Lightyear as he flies in Andy's room. Below them sitting on the bed are Bo Peep, Mr. Potato Head, Troll, Hamm, Slinky, Sergeant and Rex. In the lower right center of the image is the film's title. The background shows the cloud wallpaper featured in the bedroom. Power rangers movie poster.jpg

A single leg parts the credits, with the protagonist's head on top. A thin light-gray crescent Moon stretches diagonally from lower left to upper right against a black background, with a blue and white crescent Earth in the far distance. In front of the portion of the Moon that is in shadow on the left appears a small image of the Apollo 13 Command/Service Module joined to the Lunar Module, with vapor streaming from a hole in the side of the Service Module — the words "Houston, we have a problem" appear directly above the craft in white lower-case lettering. The names of the principal actors appear in white lettering at the top of the image, and the title APOLLO 13 in block white upper-case letters appears at the lower right. Five men in a police lineup The Basketball Diaries Poster.jpg

WaitingExhale.jpg Casino poster.jpg Empire Records poster.jpg Image result for casper the movie poster

And of course one of, if not my absolute, favorite movie of all time:

Jumping back ahead to the year 2000, movies turning 20 years old. First, two of my absolute faves, which so happen to be female led and are quite empowering in their own way:

Other classics from that year for me:

Related image Image result for Final Destination Image result for The Emperor's New Groove Remember the titansposter.jpg

Ethan Hunt running File:Meet the parents ver2.jpg Movie poster for "Scary Movie".jpg American Psycho.png

and we can't cap this year off without geeking out, in this case over the movie that arguably started the modern superhero movie craze and another fave of mine:

Another huge year for genre movies took place in 2005, these films turning 15 and also among my faves:

Batman hovers over the film's title as the principle actors are listed. An alien hand holds Earth, that is engulfed in flame. A red weed surrounds the hand. Above the image is the film's title, WAR OF THE WORLDS and the main actor, TOM CRUISE. Below is the release date, June 29, and the cast and crew credits. and probably my favorite Harry Potter movie:

Image result for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

and lastly a historic classic starring one of the only men man I'll ever love:

Image result for Brokeback Mountain movie poster

So I'll leave this here for the time being since I went a bit crazy (I'll get into TV later, plus explore years I left out like 2010 and the years before I was born, that had things I'm just as fond of now). But now I'll open the floor to everyone else to share and bond over their favorite pieces of pop culture celebrating a major anniversary this year.

The X-Men movie definitely defined the year for me. I still have my Halle Berry action figure, IN the box. 💀

I got the Rogue one for Christmas :shook:. I remember it saying on the package: put her in the green cloak and she'll DISAPPEAR or something like that and being irritated because she was clearly still there glkdjgdl (what a random thing to advertise too, did they think she was Kitty Pryde?)

I also got this Wolverine doll that year, with the dog tag and everything

The movie taking three hours to finish because Mariah kept rewinding the lap dance and sex scenes. 💀

Coyote Ugly, another 2000 classic. Between that and Buffy the Vampire Slayer I wanted a pair of leather pants so bad.
