WWE Developmental talent tests positive for COVID-19

WWE has confirmed a developmental talent tested positive for COVID-19, therefore everyone on-site will be tested immediately out of caution.

The company released a statement from WWE’s Associate Medical Director, Dr. Jeffrey Dugas, which explains the following:

“A developmental talent, who was last on site at WWE’s training facility on Tuesday, June 9, has tested positive for COVID-19. Since that time, no other individuals that attended the facility have reported symptoms. However, out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the health and safety of the company’s performers and staff, all talent, production crew and employees on site at the training and production facilities will be tested for COVID-19 immediately. Following the test results, WWE plans to proceed with its normal television production schedule.”

NXT wrestlers and Performance Center trainees first started being used as audience members last month. During tonight’s show, a select number of fans were included as well.

WWE did not confirm which wrestler tested positive, but one source did clarify that the person in question is a PC trainee … not someone on NXT TV.

This is so pathetic. A "billion" dollar company like this can't even be assed to proactively test their performers, which are working during a pandemic, to prevent something like this from affecting the rest of the staff.

There isn't a day that goes by that I'm not angry for the wrestlers lately, they all deserve better.

Lol, shocker. I’m more surprised there haven’t been more cases within the company considering they all live in Florida and go to the beach almost every weekend.

Temperature checks aren't enough. And of course, now that this breaks, they've suddenly stepped up their testing.

That said, more people are going to continue to test positive. They can step up testing & be more strict, but you can't control the level of vigilance talent take towards the pandemic outside of shows. I fully expect when the NBA & NFL relaunch in just a few months, we're going to see active players there test positive too. Some have already during their respective time off.

It's basically inevitable especially with all these strains they are saying exist. If someone at my job test positive they just disappear for 2 weeks, and return like nothing happened with no one even mentioning it.

Agreed. I thought they’d be up to their necks in cases by now.

Vince's only concern is ratings plummeting every week across the 3 brands.

Exactly. I get why this being used as a call out WWE moment but as you said, this is basically inevitable. Jobs, sporting events, restaurants, etc, people are going to catch it regardless of what precautions they have in place. Independent shows have already started being announced and people/performers are going to get it there. Someone in AEW will end up catching it. It's just the way it is.

The Strip has Covid specific hotels for guest that arrive testing positive; its the new normal of life now for the time being.

I bet there is more than they are saying. Corey and Carmella missed weeks of show before they popped back up on TV as if nothing had happened to them. WWE needs to be investigated.

-As of this writing, WWE is slated to return to taping Raw and Smackdown episodes at the WWE Performance Center, but today was a long day for many who work for the company.

Yesterday's announcement that a WWE developmental talent had tested positive for COVID-19 led to WWE shutting down today's scheduled taping.  Instead, for the first time, WWE tested their talent and staff for COVID-19.  Previously, everyone working WWE tapings had their temperature checked and were monitored by WWE's medical staff but had not gone through the COVID-19 testing that All Elite Wrestling had required of talent and staff, which was, depending on the taping, either a swab of the nose or throat or an anti-body test.  All signs are that everyone tested today went through the nose swab.

There was a huge gathering this morning at the WWE Performance Center for testing, which was described to us by several as disorganized at the onset of the process.  Others told us there was no issue with getting the test done, so it may be that once WWE got things going, they handled the testing better.  As you might imagine, there's been stress and worry for many, concerned they may have been exposed to COVID-19.  To a person that we've spoken with today (with the exception of one talent who stated the pandemic was just a "big work"), there has been concern about their health and for those with families, concern about whether they could bring something back home they could expose their families as well. It's obviously been an unspoken concern, but having been tested, for many, it's a waiting game that is at the forefront of their concerns right now.

Adding to the worry was the timing of the inclusion of fans (or, as WWE described them in their statement earlier today, "friends and family") at yesterday's TV taping.  While those attending yesterday had their temperatures checked and signed waivers, there was a concern voiced by some today that unlike WWE staff and wrestlers who come into the building, WWE's medical personnel have no true way to know or trace who those attending the show had been around in the time leading up to the taping.    We are told by some they were upset, citing that WWE did not inform them before the taping that anyone from the "outside" would be in attendance, given that they were in and around WWE talents over the course of the taping, sometimes without masks.  One talent noted they were not aware until they went out before the crowd and saw older faces that they knew could not be signed talents.

WWE issued the following earlier today regarding those attending the taping: "Fans have not been in attendance at WWE events since March 13.  Yesterday, a select number of friends and family were permitted to attend WWE’s TV production.   These individuals were required to participate in medical screenings prior to entering the closed set at our training facility, and were kept apart from in-ring performers and production personnel.  Attendance was below 20% capacity and social distancing guidelines were adhered to with at least six feet between parties, thus face masks were not required."

Although WWE noted the social distancing guidelines, there were moments where talents came through the crowd (such as The Street Profits during their ring entrance) where those guidelines were impossible to follow on camera.  It should be noted that WWE has been extremely strict with following the guidelines put out by the CDC, especially at the onset of the pandemic but have relaxed somewhat as they were cleared as essential work for the State of Florida.

I want to stress that there have been some we've spoken to who have shrugged at the entire scenario of the last 24 hours, feeling it's overblown (especially the one person who, as noted, feels the pandemic is a "work"), but the many of those who have spoke to PWInsider.com, under condition of anonymity, described themselves as worried and/or upset with how the last 24 hours have gone, feeling WWE needs to step up and show more care as everyone remains in the middle of a pandemic that has not passed and that in the State of Florida, where WWE is taping, has seen some bars and restaurants shut down again in the wake of cases spiking upwards.

There is no word whether tomorrow's TV taping will include "invited friend and family" or whether those at yesterday's taping were advised to undergo a COVID-19 test, nor whether WWE intends to address the troops in person.

If they are operating like my job they will just be on paid leave for 2 weeks, and return after being cleared.

they’re all contract workers so they won’t even get that, probably. workman’s comp insurance specifically excludes this scenario and we know they don’t care about their employees enough to even do the bare minimum

This is where WWE's negligence can have a negative effect not just on itself but on AEW, as well. Remember, several people in WWE/NXT have spouses and boyfriend/girlfriends in AEW(Renee w/ Jon Moxley, Peyton Royce w/ Shawn Spears, Adam Cole w/ Britt Baker, Cedric Alexander w/ Big Swole, etc.)

Blame the companies for still operating but it’s the talent in between shows that are the ones out there acting like fools in the wild socialising and partying without masks during a pandemic.

This is a very good point. The talent who aren’t being safe should be called out as well.

I had to run and check for this news, dhfjkdhfjkdhgkjdhfghdfg. Fuck, no wonder Jon had to quarantine himself, his friend of a friend is his wife, nnnnnnnn.

This whole situation could have been avoided. I'm tired of everything being so predictable, instead of being proactive/preventative everybody is just reactive...SMFH, I don't get it-the "eCoNoMy" means jack shit if everybody's dead....

Awww Re-nay-nay :crying2:  I wish her a healthy recovery.

Then again some of these stars weren't being so safe, to begin with. The company couldn't afford to take a hiatus so now it turned into placing their staff at risk.

but this still stands
