In a career spanning over 20 years, Carey has sold over 200 million albums, singles, and videos worldwide, making her one of the biggest-selling artists in music history. Carey is ranked as the best-selling female artist of the Nielsen SoundScan era, with over 52 million copies sold. According to Billboard magazine, she is the most successful artist of the 1990s in the United States. At the 2000 World Music Awards, Carey was honoured with a Legend Award for being "The best-selling female pop artist of the millennium", as well as "The best-selling artist of the 90s" in the United States, after releasing a series of albums of multi-platinum status in Asia and Europe, such as Music Box, Daydream, and Number 1's. She is also a recipient of the Chopard Diamond Award in 2003, recognizing sales of over 100 million albums worldwide.

One of Mariah Carey's signature songs, "Heartbreaker", instantly cemented her as the first artist in history to top the charts in each year of the 1990s. Killing two birds with one stone, "Heartbreaker" also pushed her ahead of The Beatles as the only artist in history with the most cumulative weeks spent atop the Hot 100 singles chart.

Mariah holds the record for most weeks spent at number one with the 1995 release "One Sweet Day" (16 weeks), and almost broke her own record in 2005 with the release of "We Belong Together" (14 weeks) from the best selling album of 2005, "The Emancipation of Mimi". "One Sweet Day" (1990-1999) and "We Belong Together" (2000-2009) were both named 'Song of the Decade' by Billboard, making Carey the only artist in music history with two decade-end #1 songs.

After the 2008 release of "Touch My Body", Mariah Carey cemented her legendary status and became the solo artist with the most #1 singles in United States history, a record that Elvis Presley previously held. If that wasn't enough, it also gave Carey her record setting 79th week at #1, tying her with Elvis Presley as the artist with the most weeks at #1 in Billboard chart history. In addition, "Touch My Body" sold the highest amount of digital records in one week, surpassing Rihanna's "Umbrella" (2007) which only sold 277,000 units. The following week, the song stayed at number one, and according to Mediabase received over 400,000 spins in the United States within its second week at number one.

Regarding Carey as an influential artist in music: Whitney Houston may have introduced melisma (the vocally acrobatic style of lending a word an extra syllable or twenty) to the charts, but it was Mariah—with her jaw-dropping range—who made it into America's default sound. Deckker also added that "Every time you turn on American Idol, you are watching her children."

Mariah is also credited for introducing R&B and hip hop into mainstream pop culture, and for popularizing rap as a featuring act through her post-1995 songs. Carey's influence is notable in numerous hip hop, pop and R&B artists, including Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, Nelly Furtado, Leona Lewis, Brandy Norwood, Pink, Mary J. Blige, and Missy Elliott, among others.

Mariah's debut single "Vision of Love" is regularly cited as being a key influence among many young musicians and vocalists throughout the 1990s. Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé Knowles both have credited the song with being a primary inspiration in their careers as vocalists. Carey's vocal style and singing ability have significantly impacted popular and contemporary music.  According to Rolling Stone, "Her mastery of melisma, the fluttering strings of notes that decorate songs like "Vision of Love", inspired the entire American Idol vocal school, for better or worse, and virtually every other female R&B singer since the Nineties."

And the Mariah Carey rain isn't over. Her latest 2013 release "#Beautiful" recorded an astounding total of 2819 spins (Pop – 1317, Rhythmic – 463, AC – 438, Hot A/C – 335, Urban – 263, Urban A/C – 3) that accounted for a total of 32.528 million in audience impressions.

Not only does the feat see Carey smash Lady Gaga’s  first-day radio spins record with ‘Born This Way’ (1838 spins), it becomes Mimi’s strongest radio debut day to date.

Vocal Ability

Mariah Carey possesses a five-octave vocal range, and has the ability to reach notes beyond the 7th octave. Referred to as the "songbird supreme" by the Guinness World Records, Carey was ranked first in MTV and Blender magazine's 2003 countdown of the 22 Greatest Voices in Music. Legendary voice aside, she is also known for her songwriting, composing, and producing. Fun fact: all the #1 hits from her debut album were written by Mariah when she was still in high school. Yahoo Music editor Jason Ankeny: "She earned frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, but did them both one better by composing all of her own material."

Regarding her voice type, Carey claims that she is an alto, though several critics have described her as a soprano. Jon Pareles of The New York Times describes Carey's lower register as a "rich, husky alto" that extends to "dog-whistle high notes". Carey also possesses a "whisper register". In an interview with the singer, Ron Givens of Entertainment Weekly described it this way, "In one brief swoop, she seems to squeal and roar at the same time: whisper register." Additionally, towards the late 1990s, Carey began incorporating breathy vocals into her material. Tim Levell from the BBC News described her vocals as "sultry close-to-the-mic breathiness", while USA Today's Elysa Gardner wrote "it's impossible to deny the impact her vocal style, a florid blend of breathy riffing and resonant belting, has had on today's young pop and R&B stars."

The only artist in popular music who has established a legacy with the use of the whistle register that is greater than Riperton is her biggest fan, Mariah Carey. Sure - this icon is known for her stunning five octave vocal range, clever melismatic style and colourful tone, but her flourishes at the top of her voice have always been the highlights of her performances.

No other singer in history uses whistles to create such intricate ornamentation that always compliments the music and punctuates the lyrics. Also, Carey has awe-inspiring pitch control and the skill to use staccato, vibrato and even crescendo while soaring through the seventh octave.

Even more impressively, Carey maintains perfect mastery of her tone and volume in the whistle register. She can switch from a breathy, sultry lover to roaring diva with the same breath, and switch to other registers without missing a beat. The other areas of her voice have lost flexibility with age but Carey’s trump card remains her whistle register, which continues to improve with each passing year.

Mariah's whistle register is often ranked among the elite of the elite, and her sense of pitch is unrivaled. Jon Pareles states "She can linger over sensual turns, growl with playful confidence, syncopate like a scat singer... with startlingly exact pitch."

Just CLOCKED some delusional heffa/Rihanna-fangirl who tried to go for Queen Mariah on Youtube. They finally blocked my private messages, so I thought I should post my winning essay in this sacred thread.  :knit:

Mariah's outstanding voice, writing/composing ability is what made her a star. Tommy heard her demo tape and instantly agreed to sign her, days BEFORE meeting her in person. And it just so happened that the world fell in love with her legendary voice and extraordinary songwriting - what a shocker.

Also remember that Mariah isn't just some industry puppet (Britney, anyone?) who has zero input in the creative process and final product. Mariah writes/co-writes ALL her music, sits at the piano and composes the melodies from scratch, etc etc. Hell, 70 percent of her debut album is comprised of songs she wrote/sang in HIGHSCHOOL, and the rest is new material she wrote after she landed her contract. BONUS CACKLE: ALL the number ones from that debut album were the songs she wrote back in highschool. Not talented? Wanna try that again?

The birth and concept for the legendary "One Sweet Day"? That was all Mariah. Mariah came up with the idea. She came up with the melodies. She came up with the lyrics. She's the one who pitched the idea of featuring one of her favourite groups in the track. She was the one who called them up, and flew them in. She was the one who let them write in whatever they wanted to write in. What happened? A record setting 16 weeks at number one, a record that has yet to be broken. Oh. And later that year she's honoured with a special Billboard award for what she did with that one song alone and the impact it made.

What happened when she SLAYED the entire music industry in 2005? What happened when she came back with the best selling album of 2005? What happened when she had the best selling song of 2005? Did she have to market herself and go through a scandal to get sales? To get the public interested in what she was selling? Nope. What she DID was sit in the recording studio for a year and do nothing but write, compose, and sing.

What happened when she broke her own first week album sales in 2008 and paid Elvis Presley DUST by securing the most number one's in HISTORY?

During their time together, Tommy did his JOB and promoted her the way he was SUPPOSED to promote her. The reason Mariah is a living legend is because music is her life passion, she possesses a genuine talent that very few people can brag about, and works her ass off. Time and time again, industry insiders have all gone to bat for Mariah's incredible work ethic as a musician. It's a real shame that all the fame and glamour has overshadowed all of that over the past few years. No wonder delusional idiots like yourself say things like "Mariah sits on her ass and sings songs, Rihanna has more talent than she will ever have". How old are you, 12? No wonder you feel this way. You were brought up on iTunes.

Mariah was Sony's best selling act from 1990 until her departure and she alone made the company more than 2 billion dollars in 9 years. Go figure.

Um, no. Mariah's legendary airplay numbers and studio album sales speak for themselves. This is Mariah Carey we're talking about, not Brandy or Monica. And if this nonsense claim was indeed true, you would think that there would be a scandal/big callout after being officially recognized as THE single best selling female artist during the soundscan era, and THE best selling act of the 90's PERIOD.

And if Mariah got her 200 million from discounts, then why aren't more artists selling 200 mill as well? Why aren't more artists scoring number ones? Why aren't more artists securing a number one spot on Billboard for 14 weeks running? Marketing only works when audiences are interested in buying what you're selling. And Mariah did NOT land a record breaking 16 weeks at number one because of a "discount". She also did NOT almost break her own number one billboard record/break mediabase airplay records with "We Belong Together" because of a "discount". LMAO Let's not get desperate and claw at anything we can just for the sake of discrediting her.

Oh, and that flop blog gave me a nice cackle. Absolutely NO receipts, references, proof, evidence… NADA to support what this person wrote. Which makes it invalid, false, and inaccurate. What a shock. Queen Mariah clearly has this "blogger" pressed.

The only single that was called out for being discounted was Loverboy (which didn't even hit no.1… LMAO), and no one disputes that claim because there are valid receipts for that. For any other ridiculous claims, I'll need valid receipts for. Absolutely NOT going to buy a story written by some blogger who used to work for Mariah's team. I wonder what happened there.

Hmm, I wonder if she's the all time best selling foreign artist in Asia because she discounted her singles and albums too.

And for a bonus cackle, let's say this WAS true and it WASN'T written by some random pressed blogger who didn't have any receipts: let's not pretend that she was the only artist who did singles discounts in the 90's (hell, even today… Katy Perry being one of the big names who discounts her singles). I can recall MANY singles that were discounted growing up, and even with a massive price drop they STILL couldn't break the top 25. Like I said, marketing only works when audiences are interested in buying what you're selling. Mess. Bye.
