WWE Announces Chronicle Special On Paige And Her Retirement

      Recommended Posts

WWE has announced that a special one-hour edition of WWE Chronicle will air after Saturday's WWE NXT "Takeover: Phoenix" event on the WWE Network.

The special will focus on Paige, chronicling her journey from the 2017 return to her in-ring retirement due to neck surgery. Above is a trailer for the special.

WWE's official announcement noted, "Paige was born to be a WWE Superstar. She was the first NXT Women's Champion and captured the Divas Championship in her WWE debut. In June 2016, though, the raven-haired Superstar was sidelined for 17 months. Follow the two-time Divas Champion from her unexpected November 2017 return to the heartbreaking revelation that she can never compete again."

Paige spoke to The Mirror this past September and revealed that the Chronicle episode was being produced. Apparently the special was originally planned to air before the Chronicle episodes on Becky Lynch, Dean Ambrose, Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura, but it was pushed back due to the "Fighting with My Family" movie that focuses on her family.

"I was the first one to have a Chronicle and it shows me the first day I come back in WWE, walking into the building, seeing everyone for the first time, then literally wrestling every single week, having my singles match with Sasha, doing this, doing that, then it shows me breaking my neck, pretty much," Paige said. "Then he [Joey, WWE Chronicle producer] comes with me to the doctors and it shows the doctor telling me I can't wrestle anymore. Then it shows me just being happy now I'm general manager. I can't wait for that to come out - if it does come out, who knows? I can't wait for that to come out because it's beautiful. That just made me cry watching it. It breaks my heart. I sometimes feel like 'I'm okay and I can get through this' but then I will watch that or I will watch Total Divas, and it reminds me I can't wrestle anymore and it does get to me. First and foremost, that was always my passion, I wanted to wrestle, but unfortunately it took me down a road that I can't do that anymore."

Paige has been off WWE TV since the company did away with the General Manager roles back in December. WWE indicated that she would remain on the blue brand in another non-physical role but there's been no word yet on what she will be doing.

While appearing as a guest on WWE Backstage, Charlotte Flair was asked to look back at the five year anniversary of #GiveDivasAChance, along with Paige. Most notably, Renee Young immediately credits AJ Lee and her pipebombshell, along with the Bella Twins, for getting the ball rolling for the revolution. Paige piggy backs to say AJ Lee was the first person to really make people take notice of the division, namely with her mic work (it's AJ who, in her opinion, is the best woman ever on the mic). Charlotte and Paige then both talk about how while they were in NXT, they saw the women on main roster not getting time to wrestle, so they strived to change that. Charlotte then continues off of Paige's point about AJ Lee to say that the women before AJ definitely had the talent and weren't really given the opportunity to show it, but it was AJ who started the trend of being a distinct, unique character, which snowballed into what was seen on NXT; from that point forward the women weren't just groups of women thrown together. Then from there, every opportunity the girls were given, they just continued to deliver.
Paige then goes on to talk about the pressure to live up to the hype following #GiveDivasAChance despite remaining cynical about being given opportunities, but says the Horsewomen came up and kept stealing the show, which elevated the women around them's in ring performance, namely the Bella Twins. Charlotte agrees and says the women all made each other better.

As noted, the latest episode of WWE’s “After The Bell” podcast features host Corey Graves talking to Paige, Charlotte Flair and The Street Profits.
Paige talked about how much she enjoys working on WWE Backstage, and joked about how she’s always fighting for air time with WWE Hall of Famer Booker T because he talks a lot. She also mentioned how there’s a “cuss jar” that the hosts apparently have to put money into when they let expletives slip. Paige noted that the filming process is very quick and easy, taking just a few hours from the production meeting until when they wrap filming. She said she’s done in just a few hours and then she goes home, and gets to sleep in her own bed as she lives in Los Angeles where the show is filmed for FS1.
Graves asked Paige about the freedom she has on the show and if she enjoys it.
“Honestly I wish I could have more,” Paige said of the freedom. “Because sometimes, you know you get a little bit pulled back, but obviously with CM Punk on the show now, since he’s working under the contract with FOX and not WWE, he can voice a lot more opinion, but I would love to go in even a little bit more. I love to talk crap, honestly, and you know, what I feel like the crap that I talk is what the people are saying anyway. So, it feels good, but I wish I got to do it more.”
Paige had nothing but praise for WWE NXT Superstar Rhea Ripley when Graves asked who she likes these days.
“Dude, I love Rhea Ripley,” Paige said. “I think she’s great. I think she’s the full package – just everything about her. Her promo, her wrestling, even her wrestling gear. Like everything about her, I just think she’s great, I think she’s absolutely wonderful. She’s like super young, right? She’s 22 or something like that? I’m like, what the hell, you’re doing way better than I was at 22. [Ripley is 23 as of October 11]. Actually, that’s a lie, I was the Divas Champion. I’ll take that back, but I love her, I think she’s great.”
Paige also revealed that she has a “massive project” that she is working on, but she couldn’t say more because she’s not allowed to right now. She noted that she’s “super excited” and hopes to reveal the project in the early part of 2020.
